ALBERTO LIMAS

Alberto was born in Mexico City in 1977. Graduated with honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM by its Spanish acronym), Acatlan Campus in 2001 in International Affairs, with a thesis about China’s surge and perspectives as great power.

He became a member of the Mexican Foreign Service in 2003 and began his career as desk officer for Latin America and the Caribbean in the  Department of Economic International Promotion. In 2004 he entered the Chinese language study program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE by its Spanish acronym) and studied Chinese at El Colegio de México until 2005.

In February 2006 he moved to Beijing China to continue the language studies at the Beijing Language and Culture University. He completed the intensive program on Chinese language in January 2007 and then took over the Economic Section of the Mexican Embassy in China.

Alberto stayed in Beijing until December 2014 and his long time there allowed him to submerge in the reality of a rapid changing and growing China. He participated in negotiations for the export of Mexican products like tequila and pork to China and in helping Chinese companies to invest in Mexico as well as supporting Mexican companies with operations in the Asian country. He worked also on analysis of the Chinese economy and politics and in the liaison with Chinese officers from different departments, organized meetings and negotiations in many areas (trade, investment, tax, agriculture, finance, etc.) and received many official and business delegations. He was involved in four visits of Mexican Presidents to China.

He was transferred to the Consulate General of México in Guangzhou in December 2014 as Deputy Consul General and stayed there until August 2017. From January 2015 to June 2006 he was Acting Consul General. During his time there, he intensively promoted Mexico in Southern China as a trade and investment partner, a tourism destination and a culture powerhouse. He organized dozens of promotional activities, held an active dialogue with Chinese partners in business, arts and government and supervised other activities like consular assistance, handling sensitive issues.

His time in China totaled 11 years and a half, one of the longest stays for Mexican diplomats in China and gave him a 360 degree vision of the Chinese reality.

He came back to Mexico in August 2017 and currently works in the SRE as Deputy Director General for International Economic Agreements. Alberto has also been a professor at UNAM and Universidad Anahuac teaching different subjects on International Relations.
